Introduction

Hi everyone!

My name is Dennis Yoo and I am running for Public Relations Officer for the SUS executive elections. I am a third year chemistry major (with a minor in philosophy) and have been living on campus since my first year so that I could get the most out of my university experience. This has lead into my involvement with Imagine and other UBC programs and initiatives.

I served as an Imagine Volunteer in my first two years and will serve as a Mug Leader in the upcoming year. My involvement with Imagine encouraged me to pursue other student leadership opportunities, such as becoming an ambassador for UBC in the “Home for the Holidays” program and volunteering as a secretary for the Langley Hospice over the 2003 summer break.

My interest in SUS developed when it occurred to me that I did not know what SUS actually did for students. Back then, all I knew was that SUS annually took 22 dollars out of my pocket and it seemed that science students got nothing out of it. I wanted to make sure I knew where my hard-earned dollars were going and make sure they had a positive impact on my UBC experience. This prompted my Science Week involvement as a volunteer for Jell-O wrestling and the Professor Talent Show last year.

This year, I have served on the SUS sales, sports and science week committees and co-headed up the organization and the execution of Jell-O wrestling, which is THE wettest AND wildest science week event aimed at raising money for a science-related charity. This job landed me with the task of gathering sponsorships to help finance the event and to make sure there was joint cooperation with other members of student governments, such as the Arts Undergraduate Society. These invaluable experiences have provided me with an intimate understanding of the inner workings of SUS and have given me the skills required to become a successful Public Relations Officer.

As your Public Relations Officer, I will be committed to making sure students are aware of what SUS can do for them and to helping expand on many of the current services SUS already provides. I hope these efforts will produce a much more unified science faculty, one that is unrivaled even in the face of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, and Forestry combined.

I always look forward to meeting new people, so please feel free to contact me at swyoo@interchange.ubc.ca or come up and talk to me in person. I can usually be found at LSK 202 (SUS lounge), the Chemistry building, in the SUB, or at many of the CSPA (Coordinated Sciences Program Alumni) events.
